I listen to it just as much as Shout and Feelgood, and more than the rest, so it holds up for me.
The production on songs like Hooligan's Holiday and Power To The Music is massive.

Box is a weird term for pussy but I guess I can see where it comes from. I mean, you can put things in a box, like you can put things in a vagina. So why not? Still, I find it weird and I don't think I'm alone.

Great production but shitty songs... I don't get the love for Hooligan's Holiday, 6 minutes of bloated bullshit. Mötley Pöo.

Hooligans was the first Motley tune that made my ears take notice and MC94 the only Croo disc I own. Everything before sounded like costumed kiddie metal. Because it was...

Coming off their most popular record to date, it was pretty brilliant of the Crüe to jettison their lead singer then release an album completely devoid of any hooks.

In November 2022, Rolling Stone marked the firing of Neil and making of the album as the 22nd worst decision in music history, stating "by the time they reemerged with a self-titled LP in 1994, grunge was already on its way out. They seemed like visitors from another eon, and their tour to support the album played to oceans of empty seats".
Their Philly gig @ the Tower Theatre got canceled because they only sold 50 out of 3,000 tickets. The MC94 "tour" forged the corn dog and biker bar circuit that the wash up hair bands now play, because since the tour tanked in most major markets, state fairs and 3rd-rate amphitheaters in the Midwest were the only places that'd have them.

The fact that someone who didn't like Motley Crue beforehand loved it underlines what a bad idea it was.

The NoblemanNon, non, NON! Not A great production, I said the production was great, which is not to be confused with the poor product that resulted. The sound is great... And bloated refers to the songs, which are just filled with too much... cräp. Hooligan's Holiday is the best example, it's unecessarily long, the chorus sucks bälls and it leaves me wanting to hear Vince Neil's Exposed instead, which is a fun record, the record Mötley should have put out instead of this steaming turd... Can't fault Bob Rock. If the band brings good songs, he puts his name on the "black album", if the band brings shitty songs, he puts his name on "Load/Reload"...

Trying too hard... that's Motley Crue in a nutshell. Sometimes it works, I'll admit. Although hardly for an entire album.

They definitely got further on less talent than maybe any other band in rock'n'roll.

We've been over this, but I can see you haven't learned your lesson.
The black album is shit due to both the sterile production and the generic songs. It's like something DemonFilth2001 would like. It's Metallica's Permanent Vacation. Everybody knows that.
Me?
I don't like fake shit clearly engineered for mass consumption. The songs are so bad, they have to trick the idiots with production gimmicks.
It's not the commercial appeal that makes it bad. It's the bad songs that make it bad, and the sanitized production isn't tricking this guy.
Now.
Take Matchbox 20. There's a a band with really well-written commercial rock songs. Matchbox's 20's worst album, North, is better than anything Metallica has released since 1990. Easily. No question. Case closed.
So.
Fuck Bob Rock. Fuck Metallica. Fuck Huey and fuck Steven Tyler.
And to anyone who likes the black album, fuck you too.
Psychobolia, fuck you too. All you mother fuckers. DemonFilth2001, fuck you too.
All you Bob Rock cock schlock mother fuckers, fuck you too.

They were trying way too hard to be "heavy"... I agree, and in a more general sense, they were trying to be something they are not. They were among the biggest bands of glam, or what we now call hair metal. Sure, they embrace it now that the big checks keep coming in. But for years Nikki tried to pretend like that wasn't the case. Is there anything less convincing than Vince Neil singing Anarchy in the UK? Vince himself would probably agree.

Does 'Mötley Crüe' Hold Up? For the past decade or so, Mötley Crüe's self-titled album has become a fan-favorite and gained somewhat of a cult classic status, with many praising its dark and gritty sound, in contrast with the band's well-known fun-loving party anthems.
So, the real question is: was "Mötley Crüe" rightfully shunned upon release as an unnecessary stylistic departure from the band, or is all the recent retrospective worship well deserved?
Well, first of all, the change in sound was much needed, as glam metal was clearly on its way out by the early '90s, and following the alternative trends was the best way forward.
One cannot deny the strong performance of Corabi, who brought much more to the table as a singer and guitarist than Neil could ever offer to the band, also allowing Mars to deliver some of his most experimental guitar work that still sounded great.
Furthermore, looking past the great singles, we still find deep cuts that gave us gems like the disturbingly gritty "Uncle Jack" and the heartfelt closer "Driftaway", which made for a dynamic listen.
However, one cannot deny the lack of the fist-pumping anthems that made household names out of Mötley Crüe, with the album instead taking a more slow-burning approach that has a distinct lack of stinkers, but also few truly shining songs.
This lack of huge hooks and the drastic change in style alienated fans, which led to the biggest flaw in this era of the band: that we never got a Corabi follow-up.
"Mötley Crüe" is not a perfect album by any means, and it may not be as memorable as the band's chart-topping glam period, but it was an attempt at something new that showed promise and was robbed of an opportunity to grow due to the lackluster sales performance.
Instead, we got "Generation Swine", which watered down the grit and gave us a bland take on alternative music with Neil's return to the fold.
Therefore, for its will to be adventurous and for giving us a taste of what could've been a second golden age for Mötley Crüe, we can say that the 1994 self-titled is worthy of its praise, and while it didn't save the band's career, it remains an interesting listen at a time when '90s nostalgia is hitting an all-time peak.

I simply posted a link to an Ultimate Guitar article written by something called jorgeM93 and invited discussion. Then, as usual, most people just replied with irrelevant random and downright ignorant shit without reading and commenting on the actual article so I posted the most relevant part and highlighted the most pertinent part of that. Which I think summed it up better than any of the asshats here. Yes I do like and own the album. I do not own (nor have I ever heard Pull) so why would I do that??
