Yes. I listened to hard rock, but you wouldn't know it by looking at me. I dressed well. Not looking like trash like a lot of hard rock fans - even to this day. They are clueless about fashion and style, but they actually think they look good despite looking like rejects from Decline: The Metal Years and Heavy Metal Parking Lot.

Infinite Dreams is an excellent tune; that little tempo change is nice.
But at this stage, Maiden was pretty formulaic musically. And like Dio, they didn't fit in with either the glam crowd or thrash crowd.
They tried for the crossover hit with Can I Play With Madness, but didn't get a strong response in the States.
I saw Maiden this tour. Moonchild was an excellent opener, but the crowd was sparse, especially compared to Powerslave and Somewhere In Time.
Now that decades have passed,I can evaluate the songs without the burden of what other competing bands were doing.
Seventh Son is an excellent album, and I wouldn't skip any tracks.
Overall No Prayer For the Dying is weaker. Definitely skip a few, which veer too close to Spinal Tap - Holy Smoke, Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter, Hook In You.
But I can listen to some of the others, formulaic as they are. Tailgunner=Ace's High.

Maident started getting formulaic with Number of the Beast. I don't mind formulaic when it's a great formula and the songs are good. Infinite Dreams is awesome, and yes this thread is going back in the music section because it's become good again!

I agree, though with the albums after NOTB, they seemed to be varying the formula and/or getting better at it. The change in drummers on Piece Of Mind changed their sound slightly, and they were trying new things - the excessive length/poetry in Rime Of the Ancient Mariner, the nod to FM radio with Wasted Years, the synths on Somewhere In Time, etc. Yes, it was still the Maiden formula; but each release still seemed to bring some freshness; until Seventh Son, at least for me. And it didn't help that so much cool music was coming out, both commercially and bubbling underground. That was when the luster was wearing off, for me at least. |

The NoblemanStop being purposely contrarian! Even if the examples you've cited were true, which of course they're not, they are still albums that were relying on formulas established during their first ten years. Except for Guns, but Guns weren't the same band at that time now were they? They weren't even really a band. Also, the "ten years" in my irrefutable theory refers to the first ten years of producing and putting out records, not since band's inception. Look, I'm right and you're wrong and there's nothing you can say or do that will make me change my mind, or anyone else's. Just move on gracefully. |

Ten years sounds right.
I think what happens is die hard fans have heard the classics so much. Combined with their often overly emotional attachment to their favorite band(s), when something knew does emerge, they instantly think it's great.
But as the years pass, the 'great new music' is forgotten. I imagine there are exceptions, even though I can't think of any.
Over the years I've seen fans go crazy over new music by lots of bands - Maiden, Stones, Priest, Night Ranger, Crue, Kiss, Stryper, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, etc. But don't know that any newer songs by these groups are considered essential to their catalogs.
And as mentioned, they are repeating the formulas developed in their hey-days.
One newer song I do like (though it is now 20 years old) is One With Everything by Styx. I like the song, but it doesn't really sound like Styx.
