I'd never seen Steve Vai before, as I'm usually not a fan of instrumental rock guitarists whose first names aren't Jeff and whose last name don't rhyme with Ben Affleck. But Steve Vai is different. Maybe it's the Zappa thing, but his compositions are more than just fretboard masturbation and they can appeal to everyone, even the non-muso types. Check out my pics and videos HERE.

Saw Steve twice. First time was in 1993, with Townsend at the mic. Great show. Second time was in 2005, with Sheehan and MacAlpine. Great show as well.
He's my favourite guitar player of all time. He sure was well taught by FZ.

That's a killer rhythm section right there.

Yeah it is. But neither of them made the tour. When I saw them, it was Scott Thunes on bass (another FZ alumni) and Abe Laboriel Jr on drums (yeah, the McCartney guy). Steve gave me a pick, signed my ticket and I went home the happiest 15 year-old on Earth.

Are you talking about the semi hollow Ibanez? There was a definite jazz fusion vibe to the whole concert, so the guitar didn't feel out of place but I do remember thinking this was not the type of instrument usually associated with the guy.

Yeah, my point exactly! Every time I saw him, he was either with a Jem or a Universe 7 (on the Sex & Religion tour).

Saw him both Roth tours and G3 twice in 96-97. TM was on bass. Think Mangini was drumming. And I hate the bald screamer with a passion.
Have you ever seen Jeff Beck, ech?

I don't think TM was in the band. Maybe you mean Philip Bynoe? The bassist he's had for decades?

Thing is, TM is a GREAT bassist. Bynoe is just a black guy with a bass guitar.

Yeah. That's just my racist side talking. I guess.
I remember being disappointed because TM didn't make the tour. Scott Thunes did a great job (as usual) but man, I wish TM (AND TERRY) did that fucking tour.
Lots of people in the audience were disappointed, I can remember that vividly. I also recall a lot of guys going like "That's it, I won't play guitar anymore" after the show. Then I thought "Fucking fags. They're giving up? The motherfucker made me wanna practice even more!"
Fun night!

Woah, the SRV gig must've been quite something... It was. That was the tour where they co-headlined. SRV played last that night. I saw him play his last gig in Philly before the crash too. @ Ouze: TB played with JB. One of the top 5 drum performances I ever saw.

Go see Malmsteen. He crushes Vai.

The problem with Malmsteen is that he's a one-trick poney. Steve Vai is all over the place, but in a good way. That being said, I'd love to have seen Malmsteen a few years ago when he didn't insist of singing everything himself and relegating his musicians to the side of the stage.
