The Trabendo was packed with about 700 thirty-something hipsters last night for Beach Fossils. Lots of weird/ironic clothes and haircuts, as well as unnecessary wool hats and comically large glasses. First up was opener Winter. You can check out pics and review of her set HERE. https://www.instagram.com/p/C3xa9kEthHs Then Beach Fossils were up for their first headlining gig in Paris in over ten years. The crowd started out pretty apathetic but gradually got rowdier. I was half-expecting the show to be boring but it was actually a lot of fun. Me?
Luckily, I'm able, or mostly able, to separate a band's studio work from their live performance. Although, I was underwhelmed by Beach Fossils live, which was at least in part attributable to the horrible venue, I still love their last album.
That album is fucking great, it is.
It is, it is.
Now.
Let's get down to brass tacks.
That means you, *ech*.
OB is talking to you, *ech*.
Questions:
1) from your vantage point, are you confident the lead vocals were 100% live?
2) did you find there to be a lot of reverb on those lead vocals?
3) was there a lot of stupid, witless banter in between songs (mostly from the fat guit player)? Or did they keep it to a minimum, them being English-speaking Americans in France?
4) it sounds like a lame, listless crowd. OB will assume there was no crowd surfing there at the BF performance in France. Can you confirm?

Me?
Luckily, I'm able, or mostly able, to separate a band's studio work from their live performance. I like to think that I'm (mostly) able to as well. Although, I was underwhelmed by Beach Fossils live, which was at least in part attributable to the horrible venue, I still love their last album.
I thought they were quite excellent, actually. But the venue I saw them in is pretty great. And I agree, "Bunny" is a great record. That album is fucking great, it is.
It is. It is, it is. For sure. Now.
Let's get down to brass tacks.
OK let's. Yeah, I figured. OB is talking to you, *ech*.
I know. I'm listening. Get on with it, FFS. (That internet speak for "for fuck's sake" which is a puzzling expression, but I like it.) Questions:
1) from your vantage point, are you confident the lead vocals were 100% live?
Of course, I can't be 100 percent sure but I'd wager that they were. It didn't look or sound (or smell) fishy to me. It all seemed very live. They even had to stop a song and start over. No, I really didn't get that impression at all. I understand it's a concern these days and everyone is looking suspicious but I think it's pretty safe to say that these guys were all playing for real. Fuck Mötley Crüe and KISS and all of these shitty bands who aren't even able to play their own shitty songs live for making us doubt of other bands' integrity. 2) did you find there to be a lot of reverb on those lead vocals?
There was some, but it wasn't excessive. It certainly didn't distract from the songs. The dude's singing voice isn't all that great, and if he has to supplement it with some mild effects I see no problem with that. It's certainly not as ostentatious as The Strokes' guy's fried compression. 3) was there a lot of stupid, witless banter in between songs (mostly from the fat guit player)? Or did they keep it to a minimum, them being English-speaking Americans in France?
There was some, yes, and it wasn't all that engaging because, well, these dudes are not charismatic Rock gods but alt-rock nerds so inevitably any stage banter is going to be awkward. I suspect the fat guitarist (he's really not that fat) does that so that the lead singer can vape and drink between songs. Which he did, all night long. There are even a couple of pics of it in my original article. Honestly, it was harmless. I didn't mind it. 4) it sounds like a lame, listless crowd. OB will assume there was no crowd surfing there at the BF performance in France. Can you confirm?
The Nobleman Confirmed. No crowd surfing. But I don't think the music lends itself to that sort of display. And also, we were packed like sardines. You couldn't have squeezed Kate Moss in that crowd, let alone Wolfgang Van Halen. So crowd surfing, and even moving was a struggle. But the crowd did get progressively more animated. It followed the setlist, really, which went crescendo and kept the more hard-hitting songs for the end. It was very well put together in that sense. I hope I've answered all of your questions in a satisfactory manner. Please don't hesitate to get in touch should any other issues concerning this concert (or others) arise in the future. Best, King Shit of Fuck Mountain.

FFS.
OB has seen plenty of indie rock bands with far more charisma. The genre has nothing to do with it. Fact is, that band is a pack of millennial dorks. Imagine helluvaguy on stage. That's the Beach Fossils.
Yes, he is pretty fat, especially for a rocker.
They were having technical problems between songs when I saw them, and the bass player started playing the intro to "Schism" as they checked his levels. That dork thought he was so cool playing that song, but I was prolly the only one in the venue who knew what it was.
Shit.
Yes, I do have another issue.
Thanks.
If they couldn't wedge in a Moss, it sounds like they don't have fire capacity protocols there in France.
