Sunn O))) is an acquired taste for sure. On paper, this sounds excruciatingly un-musical and supremely pretentious. On record, it can be hit or miss: there are some great movements, and then there are some absolutely unlistenable pieces. Live, it was really cool. The presentation helped: two dudes dressed as druids playing against strong backlights, behind a cloud of smoke... that's pretty fucking Metal. From an aural standpoint, it takes about ten minutes to get into. Kind of like a play. At first, you're half expecting the intro to end and the song to begin. But then the hypnotic effect of the achingly loud sounds takes over and you're sort of mesmerized. It's a very psychedelic experience, and it's probably one of those "music to take drugs to". Anyway, it was a great show and I'd gladly suffer through it again. Opening for Sunn O))) was Jesse Sykes and her collaborators from The Sweet Hereafter, playing a sort of slow, droning psychedelic alt-country. Great stuff, although I don't think I recognized any of the songs... Any girls at the show? (aside from my former singer, she's got the O))) tattooed on the back of her neck, I'm sure she was there!)
Sounds a lot like a Portal show.

How would one know what with the dark and the fog and the druid robes and the LOUd?

My former boss was obsessed with these dudes. I guess I never stuck with it long enough to acquire the taste. Kind of like beer...

Yeah, there were quite a few, and they were on the younger side too which I thought was puzzling. This is happening more and more at metal shows.

The NoblemanWell, that's just difficult. A lot of albums remind me of Portal. Like MC94, that Bob Rock production is just so damn heavy, it sounds just like Portal's ominous wall of sound.

Never heard of them. Looks like a band with a "cult following." Did they start or end the show with a human sacrifice?

It's the definition of a cult band, but this time they played a rather big hall, which was pretty full. No human sacrifice, unless you count people's eardrums.
