I think the genre was called "country alt", mid to late 90s if not mistaken. I liked all of the bands in title of topic for two maybe three releases. Wilco "Being There" was great! These days don't ever have a desire to listen to any of them. Maybe that music filled a hole or space because the 80s scene was dead, and everybody in the grunge era were either od'ing or committing suicide. I don't know.

Genre also called Americana and No Depression.
I recall opining definitively, and deletedly, on Spooge, on this very topic.
I consider the 90s alt-country genre to be a watered-down, dull, devolution of the superior 80s genre of "country punk".
Green On Red, Divine Horsemen, some Gun Club, some Dream Syndicate; those were great bands.

Loved, and still love, all those bands. Wilco obviously transcended and outgrew the genre, while the Jayhawks lost (then regained then re-lost half of) their most important members but those albums from the nadir of the era (around 1993-1996) are fantastic. Add Whiskeytown to the list.

Yes, love those bands, especially Wilco's earlier stuff w/ Jay and Whiskeytown's earlier stuff. Also check out Lucero. The Supersuckers also have a good Americana album. And here's some Speed Americana for you.

After creating this topic, I went back & revisited. Forgot how much I liked The Jayhawks & Son Volt. Some else mentioned Whiskeytown. Yeah, they were good. I remember seeing them on Austin City Limits show, and became a fan. And of course, Ryan Adams went on to do his own thing. Liked his first 3 or 4 releases. Lost interest after that.

No. I never understood the appeal of that stuff - it did nothing for me.
