AH was advanced technically and musically beyond belief.
At the same time, I find his music a chore to listen to.
It's dazzling, for sure but doesn't elicit an emotional response or connection for me.
I don't know if that makes me a simpleton; but I did buy a couple of his albums back in the 80's. I've even revisited them over the years.
I just don't gravitate toward it, nor could I name tune of his.

Agree. There were bits of Metal Fatigue that were cool. UK is kinda space-rocky. The 1st 2 Bruford albums are what inspired Eddie - haven't listened to them in awhile, but remember them as being pretty good. You have to be in the mood for it.

That's the issue with some technical virtuosos. They want to show off how they can play fast complex lines and forget there needs to be some type of melodic theme for the listener to latch onto.

I'm sure Mr. Holdsworth wouldn't be too broken up that you can't name one of his tunes or think his music is catchy. There are all different kinds of music for all different kinds of music listening purposes and sometimes it's good to challenge yourself. I can't name any of his songs nor do I own any of his music. My first experience with him was his solo on the brilliant Jack Bruce song Obsession (see below, also featuring Ginger Baker on drums). I do know that seeing him in person was transcendent and inspirational as fuck. Dude was an ALIEN...

Metal Fatigue is one of the albums I got. I had a friend (now deceased) who loved Holdsworth. He'd play AH albums and videos for me and get so excited. I found his playing dazzling and impressive, just never inclined to want to listen to it.
