The Nobleman Thanks for bringing my attention back to the initial Maiden content you posted and catching the rather unstable ground on which you built the foundation of your VERY INACCURATE and WRONG Infinite Dreams post. I have not read the entire six pages of this thread so perhaps someone else has already pointed out your Maiden history error but if not then it's surely a good thing that I am at least now able to correct the record on this mistake you have made in the actual Maiden musical history & discography...I'm big over on Chives as Gradus the Bungler (never mind; it's a literary reference you'll never get). You can see that OB put "Infinite Dreams" in his top 5 Maiden songs in his own Chives thread then nearly the entire forum followed suit. A rather obscure Maiden song. Never a single.
forum.metal-archives.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=143751
The Nobleman is raising awareness on the greatness that is "Infinite Dreams" on Chives and across the world.
The Nobleman (Not the actual video for the song. The actual video cuts out the masturbating sock puppet part that's on "Maiden England" but the music video is the exact same song part for obvious reasons. I however like the sock puppet because he makes me fucking laugh so I went with it.)It's not obscure. It was released TWICE as a single and in many different formats and even has a music video to promote it that ironically you actually posted! It is actually one of the better charting singles by Maiden! It charted better than "Run to the Hills", "Aces High", "Wasted Years" and many other very well-known Maiden songs in the UK. "Maiden England" was the VHS tape of the "Seventh Tour of a Seventh Tour" that Maiden did for "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son." Infinite Dreams was released as a single to promote it.
Since you are a relatively new convert to Maiden I'll let this one slide, I will however ask that you voluntarily don't say or type "Up the Irons" for the next 30 days as an act of penitence.
The Knäve is raising awareness of "Infinite Dreams" as an officially released Maiden single on EE and across the world.
- The "Up the Irons" & true Maiden fan Knäve *ech* Just CLICK here for the fucking link"Infinite Dreams" is a live single released in 1989 by the English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It is the only single to be released in sync with a home video; 1989's Maiden England. The performance was recorded in Birmingham, England in 1988 towards the end of the massive world tour to support the album where the song originally appeared, being Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. It was the band's final single to feature "The Trooper"-era lineup for an entire decade until 2000's single "The Wicker Man" with guitarist Adrian Smith leaving the band in January 1990 after he did not approve of the direction the band were aiming for on their next album No Prayer for the Dying.Infinite Dreams (Live)Irish singles chart #6UK singles chart #6"The Clairvoyant / Infinite Dreams" UK Albums Chart #11 (Re-release of both singles as part of The First Ten Years box set. Infinite Dreams is an excellent tune; that little tempo change is nice.
But at this stage, Maiden was pretty formulaic musically. And like Dio, they didn't fit in with either the glam crowd or thrash crowd.
They tried for the crossover hit with Can I Play With Madness, but didn't get a strong response in the States.
I saw Maiden this tour. Moonchild was an excellent opener, but the crowd was sparse, especially compared to Powerslave and Somewhere In Time.
Now that decades have passed,I can evaluate the songs without the burden of what other competing bands were doing.
Seventh Son is an excellent album, and I wouldn't skip any tracks.
Overall No Prayer For the Dying is weaker. Definitely skip a few, which veer too close to Spinal Tap - Holy Smoke, Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter, Hook In You.
But I can listen to some of the others, formulaic as they are. Tailgunner=Ace's High.

Maident started getting formulaic with Number of the Beast. I don't mind formulaic when it's a great formula and the songs are good. Infinite Dreams is awesome, and yes this thread is going back in the music section because it's become good again!

Infinite Dreams is awesome, and yes this thread is going back in the music section because it's become good again! I agree, though with the albums after NOTB, they seemed to be varying the formula and/or getting better at it. The change in drummers on Piece Of Mind changed their sound slightly, and they were trying new things - the excessive length/poetry in Rime Of the Ancient Mariner, the nod to FM radio with Wasted Years, the synths on Somewhere In Time, etc. Yes, it was still the Maiden formula; but each release still seemed to bring some freshness; until Seventh Son, at least for me. And it didn't help that so much cool music was coming out, both commercially and bubbling underground. That was when the luster was wearing off, for me at least.

Yeah, No Prayer was the first one to rely entirely on established formulas and also the start of the decline (although there are many subsequent albums that I love) but this only proves my 10-year theory: a band/artist is only vital and innovative for the first ten years. They can do great stuff after that but their best, most groundbreaking stuff is produced during its first decade. As always, the metric here is the Beatles. Ten years, then gone. There are a few exceptions to this rule (I usually like to cite King Crimson) but by and large, my theory is true.

First of all, fuck the Beatles.
And fuck Tim Skold.
Also.
Manowar's best album came 8 years after forming.
The National's best album came 11 years after forming.
Judas Priest's best album came 22 years after forming.
Guns N' Roses best album came 23 years after forming.
Michael Jackson's best album came 24 years after forming.
Iron Maiden's best album came 46 years after forming.
I could go on and on with this. But I won't.
Because I'm already exhausted.

The NoblemanStop being purposely contrarian! Even if the examples you've cited were true, which of course they're not, they are still albums that were relying on formulas established during their first ten years. Except for Guns, but Guns weren't the same band at that time now were they? They weren't even really a band. Also, the "ten years" in my irrefutable theory refers to the first ten years of producing and putting out records, not since band's inception. Look, I'm right and you're wrong and there's nothing you can say or do that will make me change my mind, or anyone else's. Just move on gracefully.

Ten years sounds right.
I think what happens is die hard fans have heard the classics so much. Combined with their often overly emotional attachment to their favorite band(s), when something knew does emerge, they instantly think it's great.
But as the years pass, the 'great new music' is forgotten. I imagine there are exceptions, even though I can't think of any.
Over the years I've seen fans go crazy over new music by lots of bands - Maiden, Stones, Priest, Night Ranger, Crue, Kiss, Stryper, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, etc. But don't know that any newer songs by these groups are considered essential to their catalogs.
And as mentioned, they are repeating the formulas developed in their hey-days.
One newer song I do like (though it is now 20 years old) is One With Everything by Styx. I like the song, but it doesn't really sound like Styx.
