I wasn't overly familiar with Deafheaven apart from their Sunbather record from ten years ago, which I love. They played a short (75 minutes roughly) but very intense set last night in Paris. Their singer is extremely charismatic and also a pretty good looking dude, which is rare in extreme metal. While trying to compensate for the dark stage, I pushed my ISO too high, and consequently the photos are full of noise and look like shit. Some are ok if you keep them small but they really suck. Check it out here:

Box is a weird term for pussy but I guess I can see where it comes from. I mean, you can put things in a box, like you can put things in a vagina. So why not? Still, I find it weird and I don't think I'm alone.

Any opening band? Packed?
Chicks in the audience? (there should be a standard grade or score in these reviews based on the quality and also the quantitty of chicks attending!).

There were three bands before Deafheaven, but I purposely missed them all. It was a festival of sorts. The place was half empty (or half full, depending on your worldview). And yes, surprisingly, there were quite a few chicks in the audience. Hot goth/metal types. I would rate the the chicks attendance 7 out of 10 Jessica Joneses.

Clarke is branging the frontman back. How many metal bands formed this century have a guitless frontman? Just them - if you can call them metal.
But.
They've released some of the best rock/metal this side of 2000, perhaps second only to Senjutsu.
In your essay, don't forget to mention how great their musicianship is - except maybe for the second guit player. I'm not sure he's all that essential. Not to say he's bad. I just don't think he's quite as important as the other four. Maybe he contributes to songwriting, but I'm under the impression McCoy is the primary writer... He's the real McCoy.
Now.
I demand that you include a bit about Clarke's vocals on the clean Infinite Granite songs. I'm curious to see how he did. I haven't seen Deafheaven since that album was released. (I was supposed to see them in LA but there was Re-COVID, and I vaginaed out. Plus, I didn't want to wear a mask at a concert - lame. Also, it wasn't a GA show, and fuck that. I'm not a HueyRamone.)
Have the full Deafheaven essay on my desk by Monday.

But are they Nazis? Coming from SF probably not. Blackgaze? Give me a break... First of all, Blackgaze blows. Except for Deafheaven. The rest of the genre is shit/mostly shit.
Nazis. Clarke wears black button-up shirts on stage... looks like the SS. Especially since cutting his hair short and bleaching it - looks very Aryan. Plus, why play black metal if you're not a Nazi?
I would file Deafheaven as "probably Nazis."
